How your schools are funded
Learn how academies in your trust are funded, including information about the general annual grant (GAG) and the funding academies receive outside of the GAG.
Basis of funding
Academies (including special academies) are funded on the same basis as maintained schools.
However, unlike for maintained schools, funding allocations are:
- Paid directly to the trust by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA)
- Based on the academic, rather than financial, year
This is explained in guidance from the ESFA.
Funding is calculated based on the national funding formula (NFF). To help schools transition to the formula, local authorities (LAs) are continuing to set local funding formulas in 2020-21, the schools minister has announced.
In this period, mainstream academies’ funding will continue to be based on local funding formulas. LAs submit their local formula to the ESFA so that it can issue academies allocation statements, as explained in the ESFA funding allocation guidance (see page 3).
